When searching for information regarding food and dinner service from the time, I stumbled across this 1858 menu from The Parker House on the New York Public Library's archive! I confess to being shocked by the sheer number of dishes. Another interesting tidbit is that their kitchen is credited with creating the first ever Boston cream pie, along with achieving fame for their Parker House rolls. Eagle-eyed readers may recognize some of these dishes and their pivotal roles (pun intended) in the Scandalous Brews series. You may follow the link below to see for yourself!Â
I was lucky enough to visit a museum dedicated to the history of firefighting last week, and in truth, it was one historical subject I had never once given much thought to. I learned a great deal about different sorts of equipment, and even got to see a Newsham Hand Pumper from 1725. Though, in truth, the aspect that fascinated me most were the portfolios of 19th century newspapers. They covered everything from heroic rescues to mundane uniform advertisements, and I could have spent the entire afternoon sifting through each page. To the left you will find an image of a lovely blue horse-drawn number from 1882, but if your interest is piqued futher, check out their website below! As for me, I will be hard at work deciding how to incorporate these details into a future book.
